One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
